“Do you think so?” Rachel glanced at Jacob. As usual, he was not smiling; his expression was guarded and difficult to read. “Mayhap we can ask Ezekiel Moore what he knows about my father?”

“I know the elders usually don’t talk about those who have been banished and shunned,” Liam said. “But maybe Ezekiel or the others will bend the rules if the information will help prevent more danger from coming to the community.”

“That is a possibility,” Jacob agreed.

She reached over to rest her hand on his arm. “Denke, Jacob. I would very much appreciate your help in this. You were attacked in my home and sustained a head injury. Certain sure Ezekiel will listen to you.”

“I will do my best, but I cannot say for certain sure the elders will see it this way.” Jacob covered her hand with his, and the warmth of his touch radiated up her arm. Strange to be so aware of him, when up until recently she hadn’t liked him much.

“Mayhap not, but we must try, ain’t so?” She tried not to let her emotional reaction to him spiral out of control. Jacob was not interested in a personal relationship; he was just being kind and supportive.

The way he would be with anyone in a similar situation.

The realization had her slipping her hand from beneath his in an effort to pull herself together. “Is there something I can help you with before we visit the Moore family? I don’t mind learning new things.”

Jacob hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. “Denke, but no. I have to do a few more tasks yet, then we will head over to call on Ezekiel.”

Despite the way she was desperate to find out all she could about the father she barely remembered, she nodded. “Sehr gut. I will clean up the kitchen while you work.”

“Please let me know if you discover anything helpful.” Liam rose to his feet. “I will keep looking for information on our end, but I am concerned about your safety.”

“I will not be caught unaware again,” Jacob said grimly.

“I know.” Liam gestured to the hunting rifle propped against the wall. “Keep your weapon handy.”

Rachel shivered at the thought of Jacob needing to use the rifle against the men who’d tried to kidnap her. She considered moving into the apartment above her café to keep him safe. Although it almost seemed too late. The men would continue to search for her here, within the Amish community. Her leaving would not change that.

Jacob walked Liam outside, leaving her to her cleaning and her troublesome thoughts. It didn’t seem reasonable that her father could have anything to do with these events, yet she could see why Liam wanted to rule out the possibility.

She hadn’t thought of her father for years, except in passing. Mostly out of her curiosity about the Englischers and what had drawn him back to that world.

Now she couldn’t wait to learn more about him.

After she’d cleaned the kitchen spotless, she made more bread for Jacob and found some dried meat to use in a beef-and-vegetable soup.
